Out and About in the Countryside
Over the next couple of issues of the Community Link there will be a series of articles about public rights of way, circular walks and the countryside in general. To kick off this series details of a circular walk around Pentyrch is included in this edition. The Community Council are very grateful to Julius Roszkowski from Llantrisant Ramblers who has devised this walk.

APPROX 5KM (3M). 1½ HOUR. UNDULATING BUT FAIRLY EASY WITH ONE SHORT CLIMB.
Start at the shops by the Green in Pentyrch. Follow the road towards Creigiau until just before the school. Take the footpath on right through the gate and follow the iron fence around the school to the gate behind it. Go through the gate and` follow the hedge on the right hand side of the field to the far corner. When you reach the far end of the field turn right over stile into the ruins of Bristol Fach. This was a store for leather hides in the 18th Century. The hides imported via Cardiff from Bristol supplied local shoemakers and Saddlers. Go over the next stile into the field. Climb the hill keeping to the left-hand side following the hedgeline in the fields. Cross over two stiles in the treelines as you go. At the second stile (where the track is) bear right to the stile in the far corner of the field. (Do not go for the stile just right & in front of you). Cross stile and head 'for the far right hand corner of the field (in the trees ahead). Cross the stile onto the road and bear right towards Pentyrch. Just behind the village sign on the left is a stile, cross this stile into the field and going parallel to the treeline head up the incline until you reach the broken hedge. Pass

through the hedge and bear right till you reach the next hedge. Cross through and then bear left to far corner of field and over two stiles to the road. Head left towards Garth Hill for about 100m to the path on right high in the hedge. Take a rightward diagonal route across the field, cross the next stile and bear right slightly towards the Woodland in front of you. Keep the copse of trees in the field well to your right. Cross the fence and turn left until you reach the stream. Cross over and head down the hill keeping the stream to your right till another joins it; from the left. Cross over and follow the stream keeping it to your left until you reach the stile in the fence (by the track). Cross the fence and turn immediately right keeping close to the fence. After about 50m cross the stile into the woods. Follow the path, bearing left after about lOm. Walk through the woods until you reach the bridge over the stream on your right. Cross the bridge and follow the path up to the main Pentyrch-Gwaelod road. Cross the stile and head left towards the Quarry entrance in a few meters. Go up the road towards the Quarry for about 200m and turn right up the leafy lane (this can be very muddy). Follow the lane until it meets the road at the top and then carry on up the road towards Pentyrch. Follow this back to the start at the shops just beyond the Lewis Arms.
