Gwaelodygarth W.I.

In August this year, the ladies of the Gwaelodygarth W.I. held a sponsored Jubilee Walk for members and friends in order to raise funds for the branch. The walk began at Nantygarth and passed through Georgetown, the Coed y Bedw nature reserve and the Waunlo fields, to Pentyrch for a lunch stop at the Lewis's Arms. The return journey followed Cefn Bychan and the old Pentyrch road, through the Little Garth beechwoods and back via Coed y Bedw and Georgetown. The 3 mile journey provided a wealth of superb views and items of local historical and natural interest. Over £127 was raised enabling a donation of £50 to be made to the Macmillan Nurses fund.
The W.I. meets at the Gwaelod y garth Village hall on the first Tuesday of the month at 7.30 pm. New members would be especially welcome.

YSGOL GWAELOD Y GARTH SCHOOL

HARVEST COLLECTION 2002
Pupils at Ysgol Gwaelod y Garth have managed to raise well over £1,400 for the N.S.P.C.C. A sponsored spelling event for Juniors and a sponsored colouring event for infants raised the money as part of this year's Harvest
Collection.

Selina Garvey from the N.S.P.C.C. visited the school on 17th September to talk to the children about the work of this well known charity.  In her second visit on 9th October, Selina Garvey took the opportunity to thank the children and their families for the effort they had put in to raise this incredible amount of money.

The school's Harvest Service, led by Class 3E, was held on Wednesday, 16th October.

MR HYWEL GRIFFITHS
In September, we welcomed Mr Hywel Griffiths on to the staff of the school. Mr Griffiths, formerly a teacher at Ysgol Gymraeg Pencae in Llandaff, replaced Mr Rhydian

Lloyd who has been appointed as Deputy Headteacher at Ysgol Gwaun y Nant, Barry.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT
Pupils at the school have been congratulated for their excellent work in the"Caribbean Food for Thought" competition that followed a workshop day at the Butetown History and Arts Centre.
The highly enjoyable visit was organised for pupils of Class 2E by Mrs Sara Godfrey at the end of the Summer Term.   The pupils were given the opportunity to learn about life and food in the Caribbean.   The highlight of the day was the chance to have hands on experience of Caribbean Cookery where pupils worked together to create Caribbean dishes and meals.
At the start of November, Tony Lewis, Julia Young and Rachel Jenkins from the Arts Centre visited Gwaelod y Garth School to present the three special prizes to Kieran Williams, Imogen Hamilton and Phillip Hicks and also to give certificates to all the pupils who took part.
The workshop and competition was organised as part of the excellent work that is done by the Black Caribbean Achievement Project.

ROOM FOR MORE LITTLE ONES AT CYLCH MEITHRIN GWAELOD-Y-GARTH

The Cylch in Gwaelod will be extending its opening hours in the New Year, and would like to welcome children who are aged 2 years and six months to 3 years to two afternoon sessions.  This will be a good opportunity to gently introduce younger children into the playgroup, and to give their carers a well-earned rest!  We pride ourselves on providing a friendly, stimulating and child-centred environment, so this is an excellent place to start taking the first steps towards lifetime's education.  The Cylch feeds into Ysgol Gwaelod-y-Garth School, where children can benefit from either Welsh or English medium teaching, and whose recent Ofsted inspection yielded excellent results.

We also have places for all pre-school children from September 2003.

For more information please ring Yvonne Stephenson at the Cylch during morning school hours on 20813980, and for admissions please ring Ali Torkington on 20811147.
